Yep,
Something for my Society to look forwards to when my little un grows up |
When I was a kid there were a lot more 'mongs' about, also kids who were physically 'spastics' and 'flids'.
It's ironic that as these 'kids' diminish and more 'perfect babies' increase, the spite seems to be increasing. (it's not ignorance cos any fuckwad knows that you don't call a kid 'a tard') _________________

you should re-read my post and comprehend the use of apostrophes in the English language, then you can apologise to me for being such an arsehead yourself. _________________

Were a result of thalidamide being given to pregnant women to ease morning sickness.
The Dr's learned the mistake and no longer prescribe it, so there should be no more born.
Other problems are now often identified in the womb and the option of early termination is given.
But there are lots of problems which cannot be easily identified without putting the baby at risk. Some people prefer to take that small chance, and if they want kids who can blame them.
After spending a bit of time with kids with cerebral palsy (shame they had to change the name of the society because of negative connotation with the name) The kids often were more "loving" than a child without learning difficulties, or as in the case of a couple I knew were very sharp witted, with great sense of humour.
I think the increase in "special Schools" has help meet lots of the kids needs, but distanced them from the main stream society as kids grow up.
Kids no longer learn that another child with severe learning difficulties may look different, but when they get to know them they are just like them in many respects.
Perhaps that is the reason for the increase in spite. _________________

My mother is a victim of thalidomide, as was her sister who passed away before due to complications with her heart.
When my mom and nan looked into my nans medical records it turned out the Doctor didn't even record the thalidomide but labelled them in the records as "iron tablets".
I know the government has taken some responsibility for it, but how can you prove that a family member took it when its not recorded. |

The fact that it was not recorded is pretty bad.
But its also nice to see, by implication, that your mother has led a fairly normal life. _________________

She was stigmatised by my Nan when she was younger, my Nan made her hide her hand (which is disfigured), and to some extent even though my Mom has lived and worked through it it still affects her. The worst discrimination she faced came from her own mother, which is sad. I am definately sure that my Nan meant no malice by it and was only trying to help the best she knew (in the 1950's it could have been much worse, especially from others). |

Its OK, I got what RZ was saying, no offensive intended on his part.
As medical science moves forwards, incidents of children being born with a disability will decrease. The banned usage of Thalidomide has stopped the incidence of "flids"
advances in screening techniques has lowered the rates of Cerebral palsy or "spazzers".
So far they;ve not managed to come up with a test that identifies Downs Syndrome, apart from the Amnio test, and that can only be done at a late stage. So your "mongs" will still be around.
We had no idea that Anna was Downs Syndrome until she was born, it was a bit of a shock when we found out, and it took a long time to come to terms with it.

she's a great kid, and fortunately for me and my wife, not too much of a handful.
You grow a thick skin eventually, and learn to deal with the issues attached to the disability.
There is a lot of ignorance out there, but there is also a great deal of understanding too. _________________ I love the smell of MekPak in the morning. |
